At I am a 65 year old woman who has been hard at work
caring for my husband with Alzheimers. When the
hurricanes of 2004 hit our area, my life literally fell apart.
A tree fell on our house during the storm which forced us
to move temporarily. This change in location and routine
had a profound effect on my husband's illness. He seemed
to worsen before my eyes. He needs more care. He is
terrified if I leave him for any length of time. As if things
were not bad enough, my son was in a serious car accident
and needs my help too.
Therapy has been so important to me. I needed help
sorting out my problems and identifying the things I could
not control. I now understand the priorities in my life and
am able to look to my extended family for help. I realize
asking for help is a sign of strength not weakness.
Participating in support groups has allowed me to share
my problems with new friends who offer valuble solutions.
I still cry sometimes, but I laugh too.
