In the News   Katrina also affecting local Food Pantry By DAN SCANLAN, Staff writer - September 03, 2005 The Jewish Family and Community Services's Feed A Needy Neighbor program is seeking donations of cash and non-perishable food to fill the shelves at its Emergency Food Pantry because of the ripple effects of Hurricane Katrina in the Jacksonville area. Pantry officials say local families have been asking for food donations as they offer shelter to friends and families fleeing the devastation of the hurricane damage in Louisiana and Mississippi. The result is the community service's food pantry is emptying, said development director Robin Peters, who has opened her own home to a neighbor who is expecting family members fleeing the destruction. "We are anticipating an extremely hard hit as many more people access our services, especially our pantry, due to family and friends coming into Jacksonville," Peters said. "Most are coming because they have someone here, so some of these families used to feeding four are coming to us because they need the help with groceries. And at some point it will probably hit our financial aid. So we are making a call to the community for funds." Peters said financial donations are helpful because her agency can buy food cheaper from the Second Harvest Food Bank. All donations can be dropped off at Jewish Family and Community Services, 6261 Dupont Station Court E., off St. Augustine Road. Around the bend: Jewish Services to host its annual fund-raiser By DAN SCANLAN Staff writer - February 9, 2005 Jewish Family and Community Services will hold its annual fund-raiser to honor its past presidents from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17. Founded in 1917 as The Jewish Welfare Society, Jewish Family and Community Services has supported the community through programs and services envisioned by the past presidents. The fund-raiser costs $200 per person. The party is at a private home, so anyone interested in attending is asked to call the agency's director of development at 394-5727.
