Food pantry is seeking donations
Demand from needy expected to be up.

With demand at an all-time high,
Jewish Family and Community Services is conducting its annual Feed a Needy Neighbor drive to restock its food pantry.

The agency fed 17,500 people last year and
expects to feed more than 19,000 this year, said Robin Peters, director of development.
In 2004, the drive raised more than $27,000 in food and donations from businesses, individuals and civic groups.
Agency officials hope to top that amount this year.
The Block Family Foundation is matching donations made in March and April. It takes $5,000 a month to keep the
emergency pantry well-stocked, Peters said.
Agency officials attribute the increase in use to a number of factors. Last year's series of hurricanes threw many
families into crisis with roof repair and other unexpected bills, Peters said.
While non-perishable food donations are appreciated, money is preferred because the agency can purchase food for
18 cents a pound from Lutheran Social Services.
Winn-Dixie has provided endowment funds for the pantry, as well as paper bags for the groceries, Peters said.
The agency, whose office is on DuPont Station Court on the Southside, serves Northeast Florida. The pantry is open
from 1 to 3:30 p.m. daily on a walk-in basis to people of any religion, race or from any area of town. The head
of household needs to bring a picture identification and Social Security cards of everyone in the home so they
can be placed on file.
